April 15

So, I'm driving to work today and see a sign that I simply cannot believe.

LAST CHANCE SHRIMP DINNER
$5.99

Let's break this down, shall we?

First of all, it was on the marquee of a Lee's Famous Recipe chicken joint. I may be going out on a limb here, but shrimp is one of the last things I'd expect to see on their menu board.

Chicken? Yes.
Biscuits? Yes.
Side-o-mashed potatoes? Yes.
Shrimp? Ummmmm.... what?

So, that leads one to wonder why they even had shrimp in their inventory. Was it a great deal that couldn't be passed up? Or are there suddenly shellfish stocked on poultry farms...?

Next, I doubt I'd be asking for A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G on a menu that's billed as "Last Chance..." Call me crazy, but that just conjures up the idea it's been laying around a bit too long. And shrimp doesn't lay around too long very well.

"Hi, Welcome to Lee's Famous Recipe. May I take your order, please?"
"Yes, I'd like one of your 'Last Chance Shrimp dinners."
"Would you like anything else with that?"
"Sure. How about some common sense, because I'm apparently fresh out... and how about some bad ideas. I can't get enough of those babies..."

April 14

Had an interesting day with Bobby yesterday, when he apparently learned how to be cranky.

Me: Hello, Sweetheart! How's Mommy's big boy today?
Bobby: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

(Later...)
Me: Are you ready for a bottle, Sweetie?
Bobby: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

(Later, still...)
Me: What seems to be the problem with my little man today, hmm? Are you going to fuss all day?
Bobby: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

(Bedtime...)
Me: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!

Clarification

Lindy commented on my post for today, something bout "dropping food on the baby is a waste," which I thought was hilarious.

Just wanted to clarify that the aforementioned "food" dropped on Bobby (because I'm holding him while I eat) is limited to, say, a grain or two of rice. Maybe some toast crumbs. And these mainly end up on his blanket.

It isn't like I'm dropping whole pork chops or a rack of BBQ ribs on the little guy...

April 9: The People Who "Get" It

Last night, I took Bobby with me to a church service. This was his second trip there, but some people still hadn't seen him yet. Following the service, we had a Lenten potluck dinner. By now, I've re-familiarized myself with eating with one hand while holding a baby. I admit,... I can be fairly good at it, and I've only dropped food on the baby a couple of times. So, sitting down at the table with food and baby in tow is no big deal for me.

Within a minute or so, Mrs. Choker (one of my favorite grandmotherly ladies) came over and asked if she could hold the baby so I could eat. I certainly didn't want to take her away from enjoying her own meal, but she smiled and insisted, "Let me hold the baby."

OK. I get it.

Ordinarily, a new mother might have hesitated. I, on the other hand, knew no danger would befall my little bundle. And it was clear Mrs. Choker was looking for a "baby fix."

After a minute of so, I looked over, and there she was, eating her own dinner with one hand while holding a sleeping Bobby in her other arm. A bit later, I saw her up and around, chatting with a few people. I thought she may need to attend to some things, so I approached and offered to take Bobby back. It was clear he was no problem, and she enjoyed holding him. I was also told how another woman asked, "Oh, is she letting everyone hold the baby?" Mrs. Choker smiled sweetly and plainly answered, "No. But I can show him to you." At this, she leaned forward ever so slightly to let the person peek at Bobby's face, framed between his beanie cap and the blanket.

OK. She gets it.

She knew darn well I wasn't keen on a game of "Pass the Baby," and like a sentry on watch, she wasn't about to let that happen.

This is why Mrs. Choker is one of my favorites. :)

April 8: The Million Dollar Question

This morning, Charlie asked, "Mom, what's the best part about having us as sons?"

Talk about a loaded question.

I told him that among other things, what I liked most is that I love having them around (even if they're fighting) and I can always count on one or any combination of them to make me smile when I need it.

Need I say more?

April 7

Hard to believe it's really spring when I see this out the back door this morning.

It looks like November.
